Your First Visit
Your initial appointment will last about 60-75 minutes and includes a comprehensive evaluation of your condition. During this visit, your therapist will review your medical history, discuss your symptoms and goals, and perform various tests to understand how your injury affects your movement.
The evaluation includes checking your range of motion, strength, balance, and how you move during daily activities. Your therapist will explain their findings and work with you to create a treatment plan that fits your lifestyle and recovery goals. You may also receive some initial treatment during this first session.
Come dressed in comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated. Athletic wear or loose-fitting clothes work best. Bring a list of any medications you take and be prepared to discuss when your symptoms started and what makes them better or worse.

Insurance and Payment
Most major insurance plans are accepted, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, and Medicare. Contact your insurance company to verify your physical therapy benefits and check if you need a referral from your doctor.
Payment options include insurance co-pays, deductibles, and self-pay rates for those without coverage. Payment is due at the time of service and can be made by cash, check, or credit card. A detailed receipt will be provided for your records.
If you have questions about coverage or costs, call before your appointment so there are no surprises on your first visit.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a doctor's referral for physical therapy?
Illinois allows direct access to physical therapy, which means you can schedule an appointment without a doctor’s referral for most conditions. However, some insurance plans still require a referral for coverage, so check with your insurance company first. If you have been seeing a doctor for your condition, bringing any recent imaging or test results can be helpful.
How many appointments will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on your condition, how long you have had symptoms, and your personal goals. Most patients see significant improvement within 4-6 weeks of consistent treatment. Your therapist will give you a better estimate after your evaluation and adjust the plan as you progress.
What should I wear to my appointments?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows your therapist to see and access the area being treated. For back or neck problems, a tank top or t-shirt works well. For knee or ankle issues, shorts are best. Athletic shoes with good support are recommended for all appointments.
Will physical therapy hurt?
Some discomfort during treatment is normal, especially when working on tight or injured tissues. Your therapist will communicate with you throughout the session and adjust techniques based on your comfort level. The goal is therapeutic discomfort that helps you heal, not pain that makes your condition worse.
How long are appointments and how often should I come?
Most treatment sessions last 45-60 minutes. Initially, you may need to come 2-3 times per week, then reduce frequency as you improve. Your therapist will recommend a schedule based on your condition and availability. Consistency with appointments and home exercises leads to better results.
Before Your First Appointment
Arrive 15 minutes early to complete any remaining paperwork and get familiar with the clinic layout. Bring your insurance card, a valid ID, and any recent medical records related to your condition.
Think about your goals for physical therapy and what activities or movements you want to get back to doing. This information helps your therapist create a treatment plan that matters to you.
If you need to reschedule or have questions before your appointment, call the clinic as soon as possible. This allows time to offer your appointment slot to another patient who may need it.
